Finding a data analyst job in New Zealand isn’t easy, but Linda did the smart thing and came to Industry Connect. Now she is starting her new role as a full-time data analyst!

We caught up with her before she set off on her new career to ask her about her time with Industry Connect.

First of all Linda, congratulations! How did you get into BI and come to join the BI job ready program at Industry Connect?

I started out as a developer in the Philippines then went to Singapore so mostly my work is around mainframe and as/400 systems, so before coming here I found that there’s not much market for my skillset. So I searched for opportunities here in New Zealand that will match with me and my experience. That’s when I found Industry Connect.

They were offering this BI job ready program, which was making use of my SQL skills that I have been using throughout my career. I searched for this program and they were offering reporting tools that will strengthen my data analysis and BI skills like SSRS power, BI Dax and MySQL. Aside from that they’re also developing soft skills and they’re offering a remote internship which is flexible for me since I a mom as well.

How do you think that Industry Connect brought you to the position where you have now secured a full-time data analyst job?

I learned a lot of those new reporting tools that the New Zealand market requires, so I made use of

those skills and put in my CV. During my interview in the data analyst job that I just got, I brought that out and they were very impressed. I think that’s one of the reasons that the technology sort of matched what the employers were looking for.

Do you have any recommendations or advice for anyone who’s starting out in wanting to get into the BI industry?

Yes, for the people like me who are like changing careers- upskill and get all the help that you can get. Try the Industry Connect program. They will help you from beginning, right through until even after you got the job.

Thank you very much Linda, and best of luck in your new data analyst job in New Zealand.
